I overheard a conversation between gamers the other day which sparked my creative juices in regards to an opinion article, namely the one I’m writing now (let’s face facts; if it wasn’t, it’d be very strange). The conversation was about achievements in general; how they both competed for them, what games were best for achievements, and how what they played and their score was critiqued by all.
After listening to this conversation, I got to thinking about how I saw achievements. A public record of my gaming habits, my choices and how involved I was in games; a trophy if you will, of my gaming prowess. With this is mind, I got to asking over 50 other gamers what they thought about achievements and how or if they changed their own mindset about gaming because of them. The results, personally, I thought worthy of sharing.

With the Xbox 360, gamer cred became a little easier to spot. Coming out of the gate with Achievements, the 360 finally gave gamers a definite way to prove their prowess. Beat the game on Insane Difficulty? Kill the final boss in less than two minutes? Find all of the collectibles in the game? Now, you have proof – an Achievement, permanently bound to your gamer tag. Gone were the days of “My friend’s cousin’s girlfriend can beat the game without dying.” Now, you had to bring it to the table.
But, with the advent of Achievements, guides have popped up all over the internet. These guides are detailed and tell the reader exactly how to get the achievement points. These guides also reveal secret achievements and story information. With the community of achievement hunters, have these threatened to ruin the fun of gaming?

The DLC for GTA IV known as “The lost and the damned” is going to be getting the full 250g. As you may know the new DLC will have you playing as the new protagonist Johnny Klebitz with his gang of biker chums and is set to be a much more violent and gritty game than IV itself , the DLC is to be released using the full 250g allowed for DLC in the shape of 5 new achievements:
